A mobile mechanic saves you the tow, the ride home and the afternoon in a waiting room. It also means a stranger is working on your car in your driveway, so it pays to check a few things before you book. These are the same checks we run before a business shows up on MechanicRank.
1. Ask for the BAR number
In California, anyone paid to diagnose or repair cars has to be registered with the Bureau of Automotive Repair as an Automotive Repair Dealer, and that includes mobile mechanics. The number starts with ARD. You can look any shop up by name or number on the state's license search at search.dca.ca.gov. If a mechanic will not give you one, book someone who will.
2. Get the estimate in writing first
California's repair rules give you the right to a written estimate before work starts, and the shop needs your OK before it goes over it. A good mobile mechanic texts or emails the quote before the first bolt comes out.
3. Read the reviews, then count them
Five stars from four people tells you very little. Look for a real review history and for reviews that name the job: brakes, a no start, an A/C repair. That is how you know they do the kind of work your car needs.
4. Know what belongs in a driveway
Brakes, batteries, starters and alternators, diagnostics, oil changes, belts, A/C and most electrical work are fine in a driveway. Jobs that need a lift or a press, like a transmission swap, go to a shop. An honest mobile mechanic tells you which one you have before they drive out.
5. Compare before you call
We list the mobile mechanics and auto repair shops in San Fernando side by side, with phone numbers, hours, reviews and license numbers where the owner has given one. Nobody pays to be listed or to rank. On The Go Mechanic is one of them, and you can see its MechanicRank profile here.
